Once my sister's BFF went to Australia, and she scuba dives, and had underwater photos at the Great Barrier Reef, and all kinds of "outback" photos - just stunning photos. So she wanted me to show her how to scrapbook them. So off we went to Times To Remember (this was long before I was involved with ACOT) - a scrapbook store that is now closing in Hershey. So she picks up the first sheet of Australian paper and says "A DOLLAR!! For one sheet of paper?" and I say, "yeah........." Well this woman has a BMW and a Corvette, TONS of diamonds, those are her Souveniers whenever they travel, she buys several THOUSANDS of dollars in diamonds each trip - so skip the "maybe she can't afford it comments." So she goes out without buying one darn thing. She tells my sister she wishes "Sher would have told me how much stuff was before I cropped all my photos." I said "WHAT???" Here she cut them out in shapes, cut off things she didn't want - and thankfully my sister - who bless her doesn't have a craft bone in her entire body - said "I'm sure she never told you to cut them up into pieces." She said "Yeah, well now I'm out all the $$ for photo processing, too." Like it was my fault. NEVER EVER again. EVER. Not her or any one else. They need to see the stores, go online, and then take it from there. My sister never saw one photo from Australia, nor did anyone. Her friend never got them reprinted. And she's been all over the world traveling since (I've seen the diamonds) and I just shake my head. You can't put a price on saving memories. I have found that a lot of people have zero idea about how much it can cost to scrapbook. I remember going to Creativity (the store which proceeded Michael's) and being shocked about the prices of some basic tools and left empty handed. But how obnoxious of this woman to piss and moan about the cost of paper and to lay the blame on you for ruining her pictures.

yep I do. When I am in a good mood, I just smile and nod my head or something equally polite. No protesting at all. But when I am not in a good mood, I often lecture on the importance of remembering and heritage etc. or a really bad mood I tell them to pi** off and mind their own business. I am, after all, a cranky white haired old lady and can get away with that. LOL

Sometimes I think people criticize just to have something to say and don't consider that they are hurting other people's feelings. I think it's rude to make negative comments about anyone else's hobbies, no matter what that hobby is.
*Anything* is expensive and wasteful if you buy it and don't *enjoy* it, but that same thing is inexpensive and worthwhile if it makes *your* heart sing.

The worse part in my opinion is that people don't know or consider how you live. Even my mother says things about what I spend on scrapbooking. But she doesn't consider that I only spend about $100 on clothes per year (if that because I don't work), I don't get my hair professionally done anymore, I don't have my nails done anymore, I don't go out at all anymore, I'm the first to take care of my grandkids needs, I buy gas to take her and my dad everywhere, I pay my bills, etc. So usually when someone makes these kind of comments (yes it really gets under my skin), I just give them my "you are utterly stupid" look - it's a very effective look. Also, I remember what my 15yo granddaughter said a few weeks ago, "Nonna, I think it's really cool that you scrapbook my life and my friends." And just when I thought I was annoying her about downloading her photos!

In the past I had friends make comments like this, even one who was a scrapbooker herself. Everytime we cropped together she would make a comment on anything I bought (and Im talking even a few pieces of paper). I just chalked it up to being her personality...in her case she is a VERY frugal person and got most of her sb supplies free or low cost because her sister was a CM rep for a long time. It was pretty funny...she would spend her whole time if we were cropping at a store using their die cut machines and cutting multiple pieces of general die cuts in different colors. I think one day she cut like 50 paper bows and 25 gates die cuts. She said, "Im geting the most out of money when Im here." We are no longer close but I couldnt imagine what her response would have been to my Silhouette.
