....people criticize your scrapbook hobby and say "it's so expensive" or "oh I can't afford that" and you get a judgmental tone thrown your way. Why I'm annoyed is these people play golf, have boats or go to Disney every year. The money I spend on scrapbooking is way less than what they are spending.
Ok, I feel better now that I have vented. Sheesh it's only paper and stickers people...not diamonds and rubies, lol. |

I've never had anyone criticize me like that. Sorry you have. I'd shake it off with "what do they know!" lol. Sure, scrapbooking can get expensive, but it doesn't particularly have to be. You can stay on a budget, and it's nobody's business what you spend anyway. Phooey on them!
Glad we can shop at ACOT where we get points, participate in challenges sometimes for prizes like gc's and RAK's, and all the great sales and incentives ACOT offers!
And, (the more I think about it, the more I have to say to "those" people) we are preserving memories--priceless really!!

I'm not a fan of judgemental people. I've had people comment they wish they had time to scrap, but not on the cost of it. But I've had a few people comment on trips I've taken or stuff I've bought.

I do hate it. I have a sister-in-law who says that to me. She also comments that she doesn't have the time, doesn't understand it, etc. Boy do I feel snubbed. But the "too expensive" part really gets to me.

I hate that sometimes I feel like I have to justify my spending on my "hobby". It's the only one I really have and I shop sales and clearance but I should be able to do what I love without feeling guilty. I think not everyone looks at it like we do. It's more than a hobby! It's our family, our loved ones in heaven, our preservation for our future generations. Art and creativity in every page, and such a release of stress and way to enjoy ourselves!

Yep, have a knitting friend that always comments the same way - it's so expensive. However, she also goes and buys yarn at an independent store (ie, super expensive). I shop sales, people donate stuff to me, I don't get it. Same thing I could say to her I guess - how much does she spend on yarn?

Girlfriend... my paper and stickers ARE my diamonds and rubies - and would rather have them too! I hate all those judgmental people - like if its not the 'money-look', it's the 'OMG you scrapbook-look', or the 'what a waste of time-look'. I think they're just trying to hide their 'I don't have a creative bone in my body-look'. And God forbid if you actually say, "Wow those are amazing pics of your kids baptism/first tooth/graduation you should scrapbook them", because then you get the 'you've lost you're mind why would I do that-look'! Just sayin... people look and say things that are just kinda stupid. |

oh NO! I'm so very sorry for their hurtful comments! Some people really need to think before they speak! Don't let it bother you! You know what scrapbooking means to you and your family and that's what's important!

Thank you ladies. You have helped me feel better. I think the reason why I was upset is these people say it when they are looking at my albums or in my office when I had scrap stuff up of my kids. I recently had a party and people made comments.
My sister says it's because they aren't creative or don't preserve memories so they criticize to make themselves feel better. If that's the case I feel sorry for them.

I hate it whether it's about scrapbooking or not. I don't actually think people should comment on finances period, whether they think you spend too much on scrapbooking, travel, or whatever. Unless they are offering to pay your bills, lol. But people always have to have something to say, whether its positive or negative, so I just ignore them most of the time.

Once my sister's BFF went to Australia, and she scuba dives, and had underwater photos at the Great Barrier Reef, and all kinds of "outback" photos - just stunning photos. So she wanted me to show her how to scrapbook them.
So off we went to Times To Remember (this was long before I was involved with ACOT) - a scrapbook store that is now closing in Hershey. So she picks up the first sheet of Australian paper and says "A DOLLAR!! For one sheet of paper?" and I say, "yeah........." Well this woman has a BMW and a Corvette, TONS of diamonds, those are her Souveniers whenever they travel, she buys several THOUSANDS of dollars in diamonds each trip - so skip the "maybe she can't afford it comments."
So she goes out without buying one darn thing. She tells my sister she wishes "Sher would have told me how much stuff was before I cropped all my photos." I said "WHAT???" Here she cut them out in shapes, cut off things she didn't want - and thankfully my sister - who bless her doesn't have a craft bone in her entire body - said "I'm sure she never told you to cut them up into pieces." She said "Yeah, well now I'm out all the $$ for photo processing, too." Like it was my fault.
NEVER EVER again. EVER. Not her or any one else. They need to see the stores, go online, and then take it from there.
My sister never saw one photo from Australia, nor did anyone. Her friend never got them reprinted. And she's been all over the world traveling since (I've seen the diamonds) and I just shake my head.
You can't put a price on saving memories.

I feel fortunate that no one has ever made comments like that to me. My Bestie's daughter even said one time when I spent $70 at a LSS by them "It's not the price, it's the memories and your supplies will keep you busy for hours". Yes, I have made her a couple of albums now and she loves them. But I would be upset if anyone ever says anything like that to me. I make sure my bills are paid and I don't go on expensive trips. Besides what a person does with their money is their business and no one elses.

Luckily, no one has commented on my scrapbook spending. But there was one woman I used to work with who had something to say about every single thing I did. I have no idea why I was part of her target, but if I went away she had a comment. I had a summer house share one year, comment. I did anything, comment. It was worse because she would say something to someone else too. One day she was hassling about where I got my haircut. At the time, I was going to Vidal Sassoon on Fifth Avenue and it was very expensive. It was a splurge but I only had my hair done every 7-8 months and I loved the stylist, so at the time I was ok with it. She questioned me for 5 minutes about where I went, how much it was, oh it must cost a lot. I was trying to be coy and discreet then finally blurted out it was $xxx!! She walked away. Two minutes later the guy next to her came to and said why did you tell her that? I said she asked me 10 different ways and if she didn't want to know, then she should mind her own business and I dare her to ask how much I spend on my nails because that's even more. (I had wraps at the time and the maintenance adds up for them). That stopped that. |
